The Hendersonville Greenways Committee is a continuation of work of The City of Hendersonville to bring to our community the wonderful benefits of Greenways.  Initiated under Vision 2000 city visionaries created a Master Plan of Bike Trails and Pedestrian Walkways. With a combination of city planners, engineers, and volunteers, they carried on that work in the 2003 Bike and Pedestrian Review Committee.

Envision the Future

It’s the year 2020, children across Tennessee call our state home. But what does this home look like? Imagine being able to safely travel to parks, schools, offices and shopping areas without stepping into an automobile.

That vision is the statement of the Tennessee Department of Environment & Conservation.  It’s the theme of our sub-committee of the Hendersonville Tomorrow Committee.

Committee Updates 2000 Master Plan

The Committee is in the progress of relocating walking and bike trails, revising the 2000 Master Plan. Timothy Whitten says,

Remember, if an element is not shown on the Bicycle/Pedestrian Master Plan, your chances of getting the Planning Commission to go along in requiring the developer to install that element is greatly reduced.

Our working map is on display at The Biker’s ChoiceDavid Hardin has taken the lead to collect everyone’s input.  Please take time to visit the bike shop. We intend to move copies of this plan to public locations, such as the YMCA, the Baptist Church, etc, as we obtain permission.  We will also put copies on our WEB site.

Public Works Seeks Bids for Trails

Director Jerry Horton said in Star News Article that city is reviewing bids to install Phase II of City Walking Path Plan.  In an article on the same front page

Historic home may be greenway visitor’s center

Indicates the level of greenway activity in Sumner County and in communities neighboring Hendersonville.  Many of us have ridden Station Camp with bicycles.  It’s a great ride.  Hendersonville has similar opportunities.  It just takes a grass-roots citizen commitment.

DRAFT of Vision 2020 Plan Submitted

On behalf of our sub-committee Tom Evans has circulated to committee and advisors the first draft of our report to the Hender-sonville Tomorrow Committee.  We have also posted a copy on our Web Site. The final report is due on 3/31/06.  We are seeking comments, suggestions, additions, and edits for all interested citizens.

Bicycle Safety Manual in Preparation

The Greenways Committee has prepared a Bicycle Safety Man-ual.  We have placed a copy on our Web Site.  Feel free to down-load and use this copy.

We are now looking for funding for printing so we can distribute complementary copies to school children and to interest adults who are still school children at heart.

Planning Commission Working Sessions

In January our committee met at City Hall with Jerry Horton, Lisa Milligan, and Tim Whitten to review the Durham Farm Project. At the work session of the Hendersonville Planning Commission on the 3’rd Tuesday David Hardin presented our summary.

In preparation for February meeting Tim Whitten has provided copies of development plats for Saundersville Station and Norman Creek for review by our committee. Frank Bowyer and Bruce Day have compiled a list of considerations, which we have returned to Tim to provide to the Commission.

Frank Bowyer and David Hardin (our technical experts) will present their review in this working session, which are open to the public (hint).

Essay Contest

May is national bicycle month.  Cathy Haley is planning an essay contest for our school children to describe how greenways would benefit Hendersonville.  The prize is a $500 donated by The Biker’s Choice Bicycle Shop.

She just started her process of formulating the contest rules, selec-ting judges, and contacting our education leaders. We will place the details of her contest on our Web Site. She would appreciate help.  Please send your e-mail to help to bikinhville@evanscenter.com .

Veterans Park Greenway Complex

Our main project, a combination of interconnecting greenways consisting of the Sumner Point Greenway, the Drake’s Creek Greenway, the Durham Farm Greenway, and the Indian Lake Village Greenway provides a fantastic complex of multi-use paths to all our major community centers.  It connects to similar trail systems in the county and neighboring communities.

We have sketched it in our Vision 2020 report.  Jerry Horton is seeking bids on the critical southern leg of the Drake’s Creek GreenwayGary Sylvester is leading our effort to get a tunnel under New Shackle at the eastern end of Sumner Point Greenway and Tim Whitten added in the Durham Farm plans the connector to Long Hollow Pike.

Please visit of Web Site for updates.

City Bike Routes and Rides

We have placed copies of the bike routes on the city Master Plan and have links to county routes. Almost every weekend a road ride approximately 30 miles in length leaves from Beech High School.  If you are interested in this ride send us an e-mail and we will put you in touch with the ride leader. You need to be an above average biker to join this group.

For the rest of us, we are planning “townie rides” in the Spring to introduce bikers to far less challenging city routes on the Master Plan.  These casual rides are targeted for our young and our senior advocates who want to get some light and relaxing exercise.  The length of the ride will depend on you.  Our trail head will be at one of the City Parks.

We will post schedules on our Web Site.
